Why Am I Here?

Updated: Oct 31, 2021

We're all part of a yoga community in some form or another, whether you're reading this just because you like reading this type of article, or whether you're someone who comes to class almost every day. Like all communities, there are different levels of involvement, different ways to be involved.

Have you considered why you wish to be part of a yoga community? There is evidence to suggest that for many people the reason to start yoga is different to the reason we continue yoga. Personally, I started yoga because I was home with a young baby and I just needed to get out of the house. I couldn't possibly have known that yoga would become the integral part of my life that it has.

What keeps us coming back to yoga, even after a long break?

I think the simplest answer is that we feel good when we have done yoga. What does that mean for you? In motivating yourself to get out the door and come to class, what is it that works for you? Does feeling good mean that you power through the rest of the day/evening? Does it mean you sleep well? Perhaps you're less reactive with those you live or work with? Perhaps you just need to tick off your "stretch class" as done.

Any of these is good reason to be in class. The trick is to know what works for you, and remind yourself why you want to come to yoga, why you want to be part of a yoga community.
